Face Lit Channel Letters

Face Lit

These are the most common type of channel letters found in virtually every shopping center in the nation.

Standard channel letters are made using a translucent acrylic face. Acrylic faces come in a number of predefined colors such as white, red, blue and green; however, applying colored translucent vinyl on white acrylic can produce any color. Black channel letters are also possible to create by using a special perforated vinyl that looks black during the day and white at night.

How it works

To secure the acrylic face to the metal returns of the channel letter, we use a plastic molding that adds a new dimension to cut-out letters. This trim adheres to plastic and other surfaces using a special bond. Trim caps come in several colors so there is no need for painting. This molding gives the letter a decorative stroke that makes it more noticeable.

The sides of channel letters are called returns. These returns are made of an aluminum coil that can be painted to match any color.

By mixing and matching the colors of the face, trim caps and returns, you can create a unique design that will distinguish your storefront and display your branding identity.

When considering your sign design, you must take into account the type of mounting required. Channel letters can be installed flush to the wall, using a raceway, or using a background/plate. Flush mounted signs are esthetically more appealing, but this installation method is labor intensive. Using a raceway is less appealing but requires less drilling to the building fascia. Some landlords have a preference on any of these 2 methods of installation. Always consult with your landlord to determine the best sign installation option.

The cost of standard channel letters may vary by factors such as sign letter height, sign location height, color preference and installation method. Other things to consider are the obstacles a truck may have during installation such as the presence of awnings, vegetation, pedestrian traffic and removal of existing signage.

Permits are always required for signs. Every municipality has a different permit procurement process and this is another important factor to have in mind in the pricing of your sign.

An average face lit channel letters sign project of a 10 letter sign, 18 inches of height, sign located at a regular shopping plaza with a sign location between 13 and 20 feet high and no obstacles will range between $3,500 and $5,000.
